Growing up in the church, I was surrounded by teachings that highlighted the virtues of humility and sacrifice. Phrases like “the love of money is the root of all evil” (1 Timothy 6:10) were common, and they instilled in me the belief that wealth was something to be avoided. While these teachings were meant to encourage generosity and compassion, they left me feeling conflicted about my own desires for financial success. I found myself questioning if wanting more was a betrayal of my faith.
As I navigated adulthood, I struggled with the weight of these beliefs. The church often celebrated stories of the impoverished and the sacrifices made, but rarely spoke about the fullness of life that God desires for us. Scriptures like John 10:10 remind us that “I have come that they may have life and have it to the full,” yet so many of us felt stuck in a cycle of limitation. Instead of empowering us to pursue our dreams, the messages I received often reinforced feelings of guilt and unworthiness.
It wasn’t until I began to delve deeper into scripture that I found a different narrative. Proverbs 23:7 tells us, “As a man thinks, so is he.” This profound truth made me realize that our thoughts shape our reality. Additionally, Jeremiah 29:11 reassured me that “I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” These verses became my guiding light, showing me that God intends for us to thrive, not merely survive.
I discovered that many churches, despite their good intentions, often miss the crucial lesson of how to access the abundant life God has promised. Instead of teaching us how to tap into our inner power and manifest our desires, there was a tendency to focus on sacrifice and humility. I realized it was time to shift that narrative—to empower individuals to embrace their God-given potential.
